Details
HAWKLEY EMPSHOTT SU 73 SE 5/1 Empshott Grange cottages Nos 1 and 2 16.3.54 GV II Two houses. C17, C18. Walls of roughly coursed malmstone with stone dressings to the older parts (mullioned windows and high plinth), and brick dressings to later openings (showing altered features): front wall (C18) of ashlar malmstone with galletting, brick quoins, 1st floor band, cambered arches, plinth. Hipped tile roof, brought to a lower eaves at the east end, 2 C18 hipped dormers at the rear; shafted stack. 3-bay C17 building, with staircase wing at the rear; north front elevation of 2 storeys, 3 windows, with east end outshot. Casements, old leaded lights to the front. Doorway with moulded canopy on carved brackets. The rear elevation shows several changes, with blocked windows and doorway. Note: The Grange, 60 metres to the south, is a larger house of the mid C19, which probably replaced this building.
