House with shop premises. Circa C17, remodelled in circa early and mid c19.
Coursed stone rubble, rendered at rear, first floor of right side red brick
in Flemish bond with fragments of timber frame. Steeply pitched slate roof
with gabled ends and hipped corner. Rear gable end and corner sticks with
short red brick shafts.
Plan: L-shaped on plan. A circa early C19 remodelling of an earlier house,
the remains of which survive fragmentally in the right hand half and extend
into a rear right hand wing. It is now divided into 2 tenements, the ground
floor of the left part a shop with a kitchen and lavatory to rear left
extending into the ground floor accommodation of The Cressy qv adjoining left;
to the right another shop with a kitchen with loft above in the rear wing
behind and a cross-passage between the outbuilding with a loft and a cartway
under.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2-window front with C19 2-light casements
on first floor with glazing bars. On ground floor 2 canted bay shop windows
under a slated pentice roof extending over panelled central door; the right
has original C19 shop window with glazing bars, the left hand bay is a late
C20 plastic replacement. Right hand side elevation has red brick first floor
wall, 2 C19 3-light casements, one with leaded panes, plank left door to right
and central C19 studded plank door at centre; above the door rendered
fragments of timber framing. To the right lower outbuilding with cart
entrance to right with plank doors. At rear circa early C19 2 and 3-light
casements with horizontal glazing bars. Including lead pump at rear, dated
1860 with initials GMD in wooden housing and with stone trough.
Including C19 front garden area railings; wrought iron with arrow head shafts
on dressed stone plinth with curved right hand corner and small monolithic
stone gate-piers with ogee caps and similar wrought-iron gate with curved
brace.
Interior: Simple C19 joinery and some light scantling ceiling beams. Roof
structure entirely replaced except for remains of truss in gable end of rear
wing, later infilled with brick; tie-beam, collar and principal truncated just
above collar and with some studs remaining.
