Details
TQ 2681 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SUSSEX GARDENS, W2 52/34 (north-west side) 10.4.75 Nos 178 to 182 (even) GV II Terrace. Mid C19. Brown brick, front painted. Channelled stucco ground floor. Stucco quoins, vermiculated to ground floor of No 178, and other dressings. 4 storeys and basement, attic to No 178. Nos 180 and 182 2 bays. No 178, on corner site, 4 bays arranged 2:2 to entrance front on Talbot Square. 3 storey stucco porch with pilastered entrance to No 178. Nos 180 and 182 have projecting Tuscan porches and tripartite sashes. First floor: round-arched keyed sashes in pilastered surround with pediment on consoles and panelled spandrels. Similar surrounds to 2nd floor elliptical-arched sashes. 3rd floor: elliptical sashes in keyed architraves. No 178, Sussex Gardens front, has similar windows in triple groups. Egg and dart and modillion cornice to No 178. Iron basement railings. Sussex Gardens, known originally as Grand Junction Road, formed an important feature of the original layout of Bayswater. The London Encyclopedia, C Hibbert and B Weinreb (eds),1983, p.46 and 848.
