Orphanage, now 3 flats. Founded 1721 by Lady Betty Hastings of Ledston Hall.
Slightly altered. Magnesian limestone ashlar, stone slate roof. T-shaped
plan: rectangular single-depth range with rear stair turret (and modern
addition to rear of right-hand half). Classical style; 3 storeys and 7 bays,
symmetrical; central doorway with recessed 6-panel door, broad moulded
architrave and cornice; vertical rectangular windows of equal height on all
floors, all with cross-window casements (restored). Stone gable copings with
moulded kneelers, gable chimneys each bearing 3 octagonal flues.
Rear: central gabled stair-turret which has a ground floor doorway with
moulded architrave and cornice, and stone gable copings with moulded
kneelers. Later addition in angle with this. Left gable has an attic
cross-window. Attached to the front corners are high walls enclosing the
sides of the front garden, of rubble with pitched copings, at the front a low
wall carrying railings with spear-headed bars and, in the centre of this,
square gatepiers with moulded caps and ball finials (that on the right
missing). Iron gates with spear-headed bars and dog-bars.
Interior: dog-leg staircase with closed string and slim turned balusters
(from 1st floor only); very large square beams with small chamfer;
principal-rafter roof.
