School with attached master's house; now 2 dwellings. Earlier C18.
Magnesian limestone rubble (school) and ashlar (house), composition tile
roofs, brick chimneys. Long rectangular range in 2 unequal parts. Three and
2 storeys of nearly equal height, built back-to-earth at ground-floor level.
The right-hand part is the house, of 2 storeys and 5 bays in classical style,
which has at the left end (beside the junction) a panelled door with 4-pane
overlight (protected by a modern stone porch); 12-pane boxed sashed windows
on both floors, stone coping with moulded kneelers at the gable, and a 4-flue
chimney stack in the centre of the ridge. To the left of the house is the
school of 3 storeys and 3 bays, which has similar boxed sashes at ground
floor and at the right-hand end of the 1st floor, two square 2-light
casements at 1st floor, and three 2-light horizontal sliding sashes at
2nd floor; to the left of this part is an early service addition of one bay
and formerly 3 storeys, altered to make 2 storeys, with a 16-pane boxed sash
at ground floor, a 12-pane boxed sash above, and patched masonry in place of
the former 2nd-floor window above. There is a coupled chimney stack at this
junction, and another chimney at the junction with the house.
Interior: entrance to both parts was formerly by the door to the house, which
now belongs to the former school although the room above the entrance hall,
decorated with moulded plaster cornice and ceiling rose, belongs to the
house; the principal room of the house has a deep moulded plaster cornice and
coved alcove with wooden architrave. The school part has a very large
sitting room (presumably formerly the school room), and rising along the rear
wall a staircase with open string, scrolled brackets, and stick balusters;
both parts have a longitudial rear passage at ground floor, formerly
interconnected.
History: founded by Lady Betty Hastings as Boys' School, in parallel with
orphanage (q.v.) for girls.
