Details
MEDWAY STREET TQ2979 SE 100/102 Nos 44 and 45 II GV Two houses c.1815-20. Flemish bond brick; slate mansard roofs; brick end stacks. Each house of double-depth plan and of 3 storey and basement, one-window range. No.45 (to right) has semi-circular arch over early C19 6-panelled door and segmental arches over late C 19 four-pane sash to ground floor and early C19 sixteen-pane sashes above; No.44 has semi-circular arches over late C19 bolection-panelled door and early C19 sash with glazing bars (radiating bars to head removed), and gauged brick flat arches over early C19 sixteen-pane sashes above; brick and stone-coped parapet. Early C19 sashes to rear of No.44. Interior: No.45 has early C19 dog-leg staircase with stick balusters set on closed string; ground-floor room to front has early C19 Fireplace with fine c.1872-80 Minton tiles; panelled partition to second floor. No. 44 has similar early Cl9 staircase; ground-floor rooms have early c19 fireplace with sunk roundels, moulded cornices with fascias and roll mouldings and vertically-sliding panelled shutters set in moulded wood architraves; early C19 fireplace and simple cornices to first and second floors. The interior is notable for the retention of rare vernacular-derived plank and stud partitions with panelled dados which divide ground floor rooms from entrance passage; similar partitions divide off first and second floor rooms.
