NEWICK CHAILEY LANE 1. 5206 Lady Vernon's School House TQ 41 NW 6/115 20.8.65. II

2. Now a dwelling house. This small school was erected in 1771 by the Hon Louisa Barbarba Vernon, daughter of Bussy, Lord Mansell and wife of the Hon George Vernon of Newick Park, later Lord Vernon of Kinderton. It originally contained a large school-room and mistress's house, but in 1926 the former was converted into a second dwelling. The whole is now one dwelling. It consists of a main portion of 2 storeys and 2 windows, and slightly recessed wings of one storey and one wing each. Red brick, partly refaced with cement, with long and short quoins. Tiled roof with ball finial. Central doorway with flat hood on brackets and door of 6 fielded panels. Over the doorway is an oval panel inscribed: "Endowed by the Honourable Louisa Barbara Vernon. AD 1771".
