Almshouses. Built in 1914 by Rupert 0 Fordham of Broom Hall in memory of his
second wife. Probably designed by Fordham himself, an amateur architect.
Random rubble, machine tile roof, 6-room plan in total, 2 storeys. An
important feature of the facade is the wave-shaped eaves line. 6 window range
in A, BB, AA, B rhythm, A being small and round-headed, B being semi-circular.
All are casements, with wood mullions and transoms and leaded lights. Single
porch to LH, which wraps around corner, double porch to R of centre. These
are open, with hipped roofs whose wave-shaped eaves echo the main roof. Semi-
circular heads of doorways embrace plank doors with side-lights. Off-centre
ridge stack, integral stack to RH gable, both of rubble. Large stone plaque
between porches: "In memory of Janet D Fordham, whose wish was to do good to
others. Go thou and do likewise. 1913".
