Originally a Poor Law Institution 1840-50. Tudor Gothic building of unusual design. Coursed stone with ashlar quoins. The building forms a rectangular courtyard with a tail piece to the North. The south side facing the road has a projecting centre portion of 3 storeys. The central W. bay of it breaks forward still further and has a four-centred chamfered carriage archway on the ground floor with 2 stores above and a gable surmounting it. The window bays on each side are of 3 sashes only with gable over each that is slightly lower than the centre gable. Flanking this central block are small single storey buildings looking inwards. with no windows facing the road. At the outer ends are small similar blocks at right angles with a gable over each and a window facing south in the east one. Then low garden walls, with an opening in the centre of each, joint the last to the South ends of the East and West sides of the court-yard which consists of 2 storeys and 1 window each with a gable over. All the windows are square-headed casements of 3 obtusely-pointed lights. Slate roofs. Diagonally placed brick chimneys. Within the court-yard the North side has 25 windows, 2 stores and in the centre a higher block of 3 stores (3 windows) with splayed front and a gable over the centre of each portion flanking this central feature. The east and west sides of the court- yard have 6 windows each.
