32/49 Vernon Cottage
II
Cottage. Dated 1787 on chimneystack but altered in C20. Ground floor has mathe- matical tiles in Sussex bond with some grey headers. 1st floor tile hung with front hung with some courses of curved tiles. Old tiled roof hipped to right hand side and with left side brick chimneystack with date. Outshut to rear, 2 storeys: 2 windows. C20 3 light metal framed casements to 1st floor. Ground floor has C19 brick gabled weather porch with curved bargeboards and C20 lounge extension. Interior has a very complete survival of internal fittings. There is an open fire- place with 2 alcoves and 2 cupboards with H hinges to the right. An adjoining plank door leads to a wooden winder staircase. Half way up there is a small room in the outshut known as 'the Smugglers', probably used for storage or as a bedroom for less important members of the family. 1st floor bedroom has plank door on pintle hinges and 2 cupboards with L hinges. Beam with run out steps and traces of crossed out figures. Attic has angled queen strut roof with through purlins, pegged in rafters with added ridge piece and old oak floor boards. Outshut also has angled queen post roof. Lounge has run out steps to spine beam and 6 panelled door. Cellar has brick floor and round headed alcove. Attached to the left hand side is a bakehouse with bread oven.
