8/205 Arch containing spring and
washing place

-

GV II

Spring and washing place. Uncertain date, but set in arch in c1855. Local lias stone squared and boasted, with Doulting
ashlar dressing. Large segmental arch with interior divided into two arched recesses with plain bracketed cornices to
top of facade wall; side walls project from each side of arch for about 1 metre and are then rounded to become normal
boundary walls: inside archway in centre is cast iron water spout and drain under: in left recess a large stone sink.
Presumably built by the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (1855-l966) when the original was either buried or threatened
by the new railway embankment.
