HARBOUR STREET 1, 5283 (North East Side) BROADSTAIRS No 9 (The Old Curiosity Shop) TR 3967 NE 1/8C 25.9.72. II

2. Dated 1588 but the facade is C18 and there are modern alterations. The front elevation is 3 storeys stuccoed, the 2nd storey being of painted brick. Slate roof, half-hipped at one end. 1 casement. Simple doorcase. The right side elevation has 1 2nd floor sash with glazing bars intact and a 3-light bay through ground and 1st floors. Forming an L-wing to the right of this is a portion which is now of 3 storeys (the 2nd storey C20 and tile-hung). Lower 2 storeys painted brick with old tiled roof. 1 sash with glazing bars intact and 2 casements. Early C19 doorcase with flat hood, reeded architrave and rosettes. The interior has exposed beams, batten panelling and a well reputed to have harboured smuggled goods. There is a sandstone door lintel from Holy Trinity Church, Margate, incorporated in the rear wall. It bears the inscription "God is my Conscience" beneath the Invicta crest held between two scrolls.
