GV II
House. Circa late C16, extended in early C17 and partly remodelled in late C20.
Rendered and painted slate-stone rubble. Bitumen coated rag slate roof with gable
ends and 2 gabled front wings with cement-washed and bitumen coated rag slate roofs.
Several early crested ridge tiles. 2 stone rubble axial stacks, possibly originally
front lateral stacks which were incorporated as axial stacks when the front wings
were added.
Possibly originally a 2 room and through passage plan, the 2 rooms heated by front
lateral stacks. Two 2-storey wings of 1 room plan were added to the front of the
left hand room and to the front of the right hand room and passage. The through
passage has been retained.
2 storeys. 2 window almost symmetrical front elevation with ground sloping down to
left. Double gable end to front. The lintels to the ground and first floor openings
have been remodelled in the late C20. Ground floor with early C19 12-pane hornless
sash to left, C20 stable-type door near centre and C20 12-pane window to right.
First floor with C19 3-light casement on left and C19 2-light casement on right, both
with glazing bars.
Interior : Front room on right gutted in late C20 and ceiling beams replaced in circa
C20. Remainder of house not accessible at time of survey although a full inspection
may provide further information relating to the date of the house and its
relationship with the adjoining properties.
No. 4 Fore Street is attached to 2 similar properties (qv Kiddlywink and Linhay) on
the left and Sharrocks on the right. Full access to these houses was not available
at time of survey and it is not certain whether they were originally a terrace of
houses or formed a single large house.
