UNION STREET 1. 1577 (West Side) No 81 SZ 5992 2/362
II GV
2. Probably contemporary with No 81. Corner site with Pier Street (the lower end of St Thomas Street). Three storeys red brick and grey headers, rendered plinth. Low pitch hipped slate roof concealed by rendered parapet, moulded cornice. Three windows to Union Street, recessed, altered to casements, enlarged to North, mullioned and transomed of four leaded lights. Flat ganged brick arches, block sills. Frame of mid C19 shop front with broad Doric pilasters, frieze and mcdillion cornice. Later glazing to windows except in last bay to corner which has a sash window of four large panes, the upper ones with rounded corners. The shop door is set across corner, (underneath right angle of cornice and frieze) and is flanked by pilasters, rectangular fanlight over. The shop front is continued on Pier Street front for one bay, the window similar to that in the end bay on Union Street with addition of panelled risers. The North front to Pier Street has three windows similar to Southern ones on Union Street, the rest have been altered to superimposed canted bays on first and second floor and to the West enlarged mullioned and transomed leaded casements. The last bay to West is possibly a later addition. Entrance adjacent to shop front on this side has recessed panelled door with semi-circular fanlight, stepped surround, flanked by Doric pilasters, rendered architrave with large keystone over.
Nos 78 to 81 (consec) form a group.
