Details

SS 90 SW THORVERTON 8/104 Hanabusses - GV II House, at one time 3 cottages. Circa mid/late C17. Colourwashed rendered cob ; thatched roof half-hipped at left end, gabled at right end ; right end projecting stack, 2 rear lateral stacks, all with brick shafts. Plan : Single depth on a west east axis, the rear (north) elevation to the road. Plan form of 3 adjoining cottages, the outer cottages in the range with one heated and one service room, the centre cottage 1 room plan, the cottages divided by thick cross walls. It is not clear whether the range was originally designed as a row of cottages : the thick cross walls and changes in floor level suggest that this may be the case, which would be an unusually early example in the region of purpose-built adjoining cottages; there is, however, a change in plane on the rear wall and it is possible that the division into cottages is an adaptation of an earlier larger building. A map of 1808 in the DRO suggests that the range with adjoining land described as "belonging to cottages" was longer at that date than at present, apparently consisting of 8 dwellings. The plan form of 3 cottages is still clearly discernible in the present range : each dwelling had an entrance into the principal heated room : the right end (east) cottage heated from a right end stack with bread oven and with a newel stair in the rear right corner, narrow unheated service room to the left. The centre cottage is heated by a corner stack on the north wall, stair in opposite corner ; the left end (west) cottage also heated by a corner stack with a narrow unheated room at the left end with the stairs against the rear wall. Exterior 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 6 window front with 2-light casements with various glazing designs of the C20 except for 1 probably C19 3-light casement to right of the left hand porch. Left hand and central porches shallow and carried on timber posts ; thatched porch to right. The rear wall is blind except for 2 very small windows with C20 leaded panes. Interior The left hand heated room has a chamfered cross beam, the heated room in the centre has a scroll-stopped C17 axial beam. The right hand room has a chamfered scroll-stopped cross beam supported on a post and a C17 fireplace with an ovolo- moulded lintel, volcanic stone jambs and a bread oven. The window of this room has a scroll-stopped lintel ; timber newel stair in rear right corner. Safe with timber door dated 1710 in first floor room right. Roof Not fully inspected but 1 pegged collar rafter roof truss is visible in the first floor room right ; roof construction said to be consistent throughout the range. One of a thatched group at Raddon.
