5/128 Five Chest tombs in the churchyard north of Church of St. Andrew
GV II
Group of five chest tombs, 2 east of church path, 3 west, C18 ashlar. The group comprises, from east: 1. Stephens monument, early to mid C18 with fielded plaques and relief-ornamented angle and centre piers, scroll-ornamented frieze and coved capstone. North side inscription to John Stephens, died 1733. 2. F. &.S. Child monument with shield plaques and pulvinated frieze broken forward over centre and angle piers. South side inscriptions to Francis (died 1767) and Stephen (died 1764) and their father, Francis (died 1780). On north side inscription to Robert Child (died 1800) and his wife. 3. T. Child monument, early c18, with large oval plaques each side flanked by fielded panels. West end inscription to Thomas Child died 1719, main north inscription dated 1737. 4. Unidentified monument, mid C18, with 2 octagonal plaques each side, relief-ornamented piers and moulded cornice broken forward over piers. South side inscription to Joseph ? died 1778. 5. Pearse monument, mid C18 with 2 arched-headed plaques each side, ornamented piers, moulded cornice and carved cartouches to each end. South side inscription to Nicholas Pearse Sr died 1738 and Mary Pearse died 1735.
