GV II

Inn now house, later C17, red brick with ashlar dressings and hipped stone slate eaves roof, 2 storeys, L-plan principal range with rubble stone moulded plinth, flush quoins and coved eaves cornice. Six-window range to front of 2-light recessed ovolo- moulded stone mullion windows with C20 leaded lights and dripcourses over each floor. Ground floor fourth bay has door in C19 surround set in C19 gabled brick and stone porch. South end wall has window set in bolection moulded former doorcase. Flush quoins of south east angle are set further out on ground floor than those above, indicating possible rebuilding of earlier structure. North end has ridge stack on rear wing and inserted 2-light window. East end wall has two 2-light windows each floor paired under single hoodmoulds. C19 south side addition. Gabled south east rear wing with south side plinth, two 2-light ovolo-moulded windows, dripcourse and eaves dormer. Rubble stone east end wall. North side 2-light window and dormer. House was formerly the Bear Inn on main London road which crossed the downs by Beacon Hill.
