Pennybrooks
II
House. Late Medieval 3 bay open hall house, possibly dating from the C14 with
inserted late C16 ceiling and chimney, refronted in tiles in early C19
and with mainly C20 refenestration and 1 bay C20 extension. Timber framed
on brick and sandstone plinth, the exterior covered in early C19 tiles.
Very steeply pitched hipped tiled roof with gablets and late C16 brick
panelled chimneystack to right of centre and C19 stack to left, 2 storeys
4 windows. 1st floor has one early C19 iron casement window but otherwise
C20 casements with leaded lights. C20 brick and tiled gabled porch.
Interior has roll moulded dais beam to former open hall with chamfered
close-studded partition beneath it. On the end right side is a C16 4
centred arched door opening with blank spandrels and a plank door on
pintle hinges which would originally have led to the solar. Inserted
late C16 ceiling with 1½ inch chamfers and lambs tongue steps and similar
floor joists. Large inglenook fireplace with wooden bressumer and run
out stops, the bread oven no longer extant. The end bay to the original
service end also has an open fireplace with spice cupboard and joists
with run out stops . One beam is dated 1889 though this refers to a refurbishing.
Winder staircase to 1st floor which has large jowled posts and curved
wind braces. Roof has 2 crown posts of square section with 1 head brace
each supporting a central beam between the 2 collar beams. Sans purlin
roof. Traces of smoke blackening to plaster partition. This could have
been an iron master's house at some stage as there is a large pond in
the garden which might have been a hammer pond.
