Details

HORSFORTH SCOTLAND LANE SE 23 NW LS 18 (east side, off) 8/152 Beech House - - II

House. Circa 1800 for William Craven, papermaker, but with part of mid to late C18 farmhouse on one side, and C20 extension on the other side. Mostly ashlar, with stone slate roof on 2 levels. Double-depth plan. Two storeys and formerly 3 bays but now 4, with earlier part set back at left end; principal element formerly symmetrical; moulded string course; plain central doorway with 8-pane overlight, and straight canopy on scrolled brackets, 2 French windows at ground floor with margin panes and moulded surrounds; three 16-pane sashes at 1st floor, with similar surrounds; C20 extension to the right in matching style and materials (except colour of masonry, which is variegated). Moulded cornice and low parapet. Gable chimneys. Earlier part at left end, 2 lower storeys and one bay, has doorway close to junction, a 2-light window at ground floor, 3-light window above, both with flat-faced flush-mullions, and glazing bars; and a gable chimney. Rear in similar style.

Interior: dog-legged open-string staircase, with slender turned balusters, ramped handrail with wreathed curtail; moulded plaster cornices; panelled doorcases.
