HORSFORTH TOWN STREET SE 23 NW LS18 (west side) 8/157 Mechanics Institution - - II

Mechanics Institution, now library. Dated 1881 over door. Sandstone ashlar, slate roof. Square front block. Two tall storeys, 3 x 3 bays; symmetrical, in classical style; 1st floor sill-band; central porch breaking forwards, with pilasters flanking a moulded doorway, a raised panel over the door inscribed "MECHANICS INSTITVTION mdccclxxxi" a pediment above the panel; from this level the projected centre is carried up as an oriel with corbelled quadrantal sides, superimposed panelled pilasters flanking a large round-headed sashed window with moulded architrave, narrow curved side windows, also sashed, and a swag above the central window, and finished with a pediment. The outer bays have cellar windows at pavement level, large tripartite sashes at ground floor, with cornices above, and sashed windows at 1st floor with pedimented architraves. All these windows have glazing bars in the upper leaves. Moulded cornice. Side-wall chimneys. Sides and rear more simply treated.
