5/135 Bell Farmhouse
GV II
Inn now farmhouse, C17 core, altered in C18 and C19, ironstone rubble with hipped slate roof and northend ridge stack. Two storeys. Right section of front is double-fronted with two C19 sashes with hoodmoulds to each floor and off-centre 6-panel door with pedimental timber hood. Flush ashlar quoins to right. Left section has ground floor French windows and brick quoins to left. North end wall is rendered with C20 windows, south end has C19 sashes as on main front. Two rear wings, infilled between. Ground floor north room has chamfered spine beam with jewelled stops. House was formerly the Bell Inn on main London road. Both The Bear and The Bell existed in 1642 when damage by troops in the Civil War is recorded. (R.J. Cole, A short history of Heddington and district, n.d. 41-2)
