DOWLISH WAKE ST 31 SE 2/10001 HIGHER FARMHOUSE
Grade II
Farmhouse, now house C16 with C17 alterations. Squared and coursed limestone with stone-coped thatch roof, pantile to rear and brick ridge stack. C16 house of 3-unit plan with 2 integral units to rear left formed out of tall outshut; C17 fireplace block probably replaced; C16 smoke bay. 2 storeys and attic; 3 window range. C20 thatch porch and mullioned windows to front. Right-hand (south) gable has C17 ovolo-moulded stone- mullioned windows. Interior noted as having C16 chamfered beams with keeled stops and C17 fireplace with depressed centred arches. C16 plank and muntin screen to room on right and to rear outshut. C17 stair with solid timber treads and first-floor doorways with depressed 4-centred heads, jointed cruck roof. An exceptionally early example of a C16 house with an integral rear outshut. (VAG report).
