NZ 1055 CONSETT FRONT STREET

(West side) Ebchester 17/41 Demesne Farm and 6/6/51 Demesne House (Formerly listed as Demesne Farm house) GV II* Farmhouse, now 2 separate residences. Dated 1705 for R.F. on lintel. Sandstone rubble with gritstone quoins and ashlar dressings; roofs of Lakeland and Welsh slate, with stone gable copings and ashlar and yellow brick chimneys. 2 storeys, 3 bays and lower 2-storey, 3-bay right extension. Central half-glazed door in stop-chamfered surround with irregular-block jambs and lintel carved RF and 1705 flanking coats of arms; principal lines of carving are double. Windows in outer bays have wide irregular wood lintels and are partly blocked, with 2-light horizontal sliding sashes inserted over painted rendered sills; rendered lintel to window over door. Right extension, formerly agricultural building, has C20 porch at left; one fixed light and 2 horizontal sliding sashes on ground floor, with projecting stone sills, under inserted lintels; first floor has horizontal sliding sash inserted above door, and vent slit under wide irregular wood lintel at right. Interior: main house has open-well stair with wide grip handrail on fat twist- and-urn balusters, with panelled newels, some with flat caps, and moulded closed string; parallel balustrade on outer wall and across landing has some balusters missing, and continues across blocked landing window; right ground-floor room has chamfered fire-beam with heck-post; bread-oven and stone fire surround inserted; salt cupboard in inglenook on gable wall and blocked fire window in front wall, both with rough wood lintels; left ground-floor room said to have plain stone fire surround concealed behind C20 fireplace. First floor left room has painted panels on gable wall, now concealed by false wall but reported to depict men with guns in fields of corn-stooks, and pagoda-like building. Ground-floor rooms have tongue-and-groove boarded ceilings. Interior of right house shows some large irregular beams; low wide irregular opening in rear wall under rough wood lintel; 2 wide arches in former cart-shed incorporated in house.
