(South side) Ebchester 17/50 Group of 2 tombs c.5 metres south of vestry of Church of St. Ebba GV II Group of 2 tombs, comprising one chest and a cross, to members of the Surtees families, of Hamsterley fall (q.v.). Marble, sandstone ashlar. C18; C19. 1. Tall marble cross on stepped base to R.S. Surtees, died 1864, and members of his family to 1871. High relief lilies twined around shaft. R.S. Surtees was the author of many novels of English country life and hunting, in particular the "Jorrocks" books 2. Chest with tooled sandstone sides and moulded top. Inscription to Robert Surtees of Milkwell Burn, died 1700, and members of his family to 1777. Well cut letters.
