NZ 05 SE CONSETT MESSENGER BANK (South side) Shotley Bridge 5/73 (inset) Outbuilding south of Messenger House GV II

Cart shed and loft. Early C19. Coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins; Welsh slate roof with stone gable coping. 3 storeys, one bay with ground sloping down to right. Boarded Dutch door at right under flat stone lintel;similar lintel and projecting stone sill to boarded window at left, the sill at ground level; similar lintels and sill to boarded first-floor loft door and smaller second-floor window with slatted lower part and upper glazing bars, now without glass and boarded on inside. Large sandstone blocks in double parabola around this opening probably formerly supported hoist. 2-storey rear on higher ground has double boarded vehicle doors in alternate-block jambs under flat stone lintel; stone shelf and blocked pigeon holes in gable peak over boarded loft opening. Included for group value.
