Pair of chest tombs. Late C19. Stone and marble. The southern tomb, commemorating James Duke Coleridge, d. 1857 is a rectangular stone slab with a cross, bible and chalice carved in high relief on the top and the inscription round the side. James Duke Coleridge, nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge was, like his brother Sir John Taylor Coleridge of Ottery St Mary and other members of the family, one of the key figures in the ecclesiological and Gothic revival in Devon.
The northern tomb is a coped marble chest tomb in the medieval Gothic style with a foliated cross carved on the top. The inscription on the sides commemorates Philip Freeman, Archdeacon of Exeter and vicar of Thorverton, died 1875. Archdeacon Freeman, antiquarian and author, wrote a history of Exeter Cathedral and was one of the first scholars to fully utilize the Cathedral Fabric Rolls.
