Rose Cottage
GV
II
Cottage. Possibly C17 origins although the C17 features may be re-used ; right end later than left end. Whitewashed rendered cob and stone; thatched roof with plain ridge hipped at right end, slated to rear of ridge; axial stack with C19 or C20 brick shaft.
Plan: single depth two room plan, the larger heated service room to the left, a smaller unheated right hand room has a slightly higher roofline and is probably a later addition; entrance on front at left. It is likely that Rose Cottage was formerly one property with Hillbrook (qv), adjoining at the left end but the exact relationship between the two buildings and the early plan is not longer clear.
Exterior: two storeys. Asymmetrical three window front with plank front door to left. Two- and three-light small pane timber casements, probably C19, except for first floor right which is an C18 three-light casement with square leaded panes. A section of dressed stone has been exposed round the door jamb.
Interior: the left hand room has an open fireplace with very fine moulded C17 volcanic stone jambs with cushion stops. There are no other C17 features and the jambs may be re-sited, although C17 features in the adjoining house (Hillbrook) suggests that Rose Cottage may have been the parlour of a larger C17.house. The principal rafters appear to be straight.
