SS 90 SW THORVERTON THORVERTON 8/159 The Old Vicarage 25.6.74 II Vicarage, divided into flats. 1840, by John Hayward of Exeter at a cost of £1,900. Plastered and blocked out with bitumen-painted hipped slate roofs ; 5 stacks with rendered or brick shafts. Plan: Overall L plan with an approximately square on plan block facing north east and a rear right wing. The interior has been gutted for conversion to flats and the original internal arrangements can no longer be established from the present building. 2 storeys. 3-bay front (north east) elevation with plinth, deep eaves, 12-pane sashes (linger to the ground floor) and a shallow central porch with corner pilasters and a large cornice. The wing, with no plinth, also has 12-pane sashes. Some new doors date from the 1970s conversion. Timber bellcote on roof, bell-shaped and supported on 4 posts. Interior : some fragments of plaster cornices and archways survive inside. John Hayward was the leading ecclesiastical architect in the County in the 1840s and 50s. His parson houses include both Gothic and Classical designs. Architect's drawings of the house survive in the DRO.
