Details

ST4615 NORTON SUB HAMDON CP HIGHER STREET (West side) 9/223 Vine Cottage 19.4.61 GV II Cottage at end of row. C17 origins, modified C19. Ham stone cut and squared double Roman clay tiled roof, replacing thatch, between coped gables; stone end chimney stacks. Two storeys, 2 bays. Hollow-chamfered mullioned windows in chamfered recesses, all 3-light except lower bay 2 which is 4-light, all with separate labels, horizontal-bar glazing and iron-framed opening lights: additional plain window left of bay 1: between bays a C20 boarded door, up 5 steps, in moulded cambered-arched doorway with incised spandrils, with label over shallow lintol; indications of previous door position in the left half of lower bay 2 - the cottage may have been 2 formerly - and also signs that the front wall was raised slightly to accommodate thinner roofing material. South gable may be a rebuild, but it includes two 2-light mullioned windows, one at each level. C20 flat- roofed extension to rear. Interior not seen.
