GV II

Stable court, partly converted to housing. Circa 1850. Entrance archway sandstone ashlar, the remainder rendered; slate roofs.

Plan: 4 ranges round a courtyard with an entrance archway in the east range. The north range is a house; coach houses in the west range; stabling originally in the south and east ranges. The courtyard is not completely enclosed; there is access to the house between the west and south ranges.

Exterior: 2 storey house; stable buildings single-storey. East elevation 5 bays with a grand projecting stone archway in the first bay from the left. This has a round-headed moulded arch with a triple keystone springing from imposts with chamfered rustication and moulded capitals. Above the capitals chamfered quoins extend to the gable, which is treated as a pediment with a moulded cornice with ball finials at the apex and to left and right. Crest showing a cock is carved in relief in the gable. 4-pane plate glass sashes, one to the left, 3 to the right. The roof is surmounted by 2 elaborate ventilators with round-headed louvred panels and gabled roofs on brackets with finials at the apex. Inside the courtyard the west range has 4 paired carriage doors with strap hinges and a slate pent roof carried on iron columns. 3- or 4-room plan house in the north range with 2 axial stacks and an irregular 5-window front of C19 and C20 windows. A wide archway in the centre has been filled in. The stables are somewhat altered and are partly used as garages.

Group value with Shirely Hall (q.v.).
