Details

SE 92 SW WINTERINGHAM ERMINE STREET (west side) 2/32 Stables, Dovecote and Screen Walls approximately 30 metres 6.11.67 east of Winteringham Grange Farmhouse (formerly listed as Outbuildings at Winteringham Grange) GV II

Stables, dovecote and screen walls. Late C18 - C19, for Carrington Estate. Coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings, colourwashed, with traces of incised pointing in imitation of ashlar. Pantile roofs. Gothick style. Stable/dovecote range rectangular on plan, with flanking screen walls at right angles. Range encloses north side of stackyard and adjoins the barn (q.v.) to left. 2 storeys and single storey with attic, 15 bays: central 2- storey 3-bay stable/dovecote breaks forward, flanked by single storey and attic 4-bay stables and 2-storey single-bay screen walls breaking forward at left and right ends, with similar single-bay walls projecting forwards at right angles. Stable/dovecote: central segmental-headed door flanked by round-headed panels containing square ventilation hatches; three oval panels above. First floor brick band with fragmentary former first storey wall extending to brick band above; gable walls ruinous. Flanking stables each have original segmental-headed and later C19 inserted doors flanked by pointed panels (3 to stable on left, 2 to right), with 4 oval panels above and a stepped and dentilled brick eaves cornice. Adjoining screen wall to right: round-headed ground floor panel with oval panel above, 2 first floor brick bands with oval panel above and stone-coped parapet; similar section at right angles, adjoining barn, but with segmental-headed door. Screen walls to left similar, but with later blocked opening instead of round- headed panel, and a further bay of stone-coped wall at the left end ramped up between projecting brick piers to the 2-storey section. All panels have brick surrounds and traces of original colour-washed plaster with glazing bars in relief: pointed panels have intersecting Gothick bars, oval panels have radial bars and round-headed panels have oval "panes" beneath radial bars. Right gable-end of stable has oval attic opening. Rear of stables have segmental-arched blind arcades. Apart from one stable stall to right, this unusual and finely - detailed farm range is disused and derelict at time of re-survey.
