ST4817 STOKE SUB HAMDON CP EAST STOKE (South side) 7/295 Gaylard monument in churchyard, about 2 metres east of chancel, Church of St. Mary the Virgin GV II Headstone. C18. Ham stone slab, about 1.05 metre wide and 1.65m high, chamfered back: twisted vine frame, with centre drop for nearly half the height of the panel; top almost flat, but includes two semi-circular arches with angels and trumpets, a waving figure in panel between, with skull in scroll panel to left and hourglass to right. Commemorates Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Gaylard, died 1737 and others. One of the largest stones in a varied churchyard, and one of the best preserved; the lettering end carving well illustrate the skills of the masons of the nearby Ham stone quarry.
