WIDECOMBE-IN- SX 77 NW THE-MOOR 2/205 Southcombe Farmhouse 23.8.55 - II
House, formerly a farmhouse; now sub-divided. Early C16, or possibly older; right- hand end remodelled and possibly enlarged in early C19. Granite rubble, slate-hung at the front. Tarred slated roofs. 3 large, plain granite chimneystacks with stone thatch weatherings; 2 are close together on ridge, slightly off-centre to left, the third is on the right-hand gable. Plan consists of a cross-passage with stack of apparently C16 date at either side; 2 small rooms to left, 2 larger rooms to right, probably with C19 entrance-hall in the centre. 2 storeys, with single-storeyed lean-tos. 5-window front; all windows are C20. Entrance to cross-passage has a single-storey stone porch with pent roof, extended on left-hand side; chamfered shouldered-head granite doorway of C16 or earlier. In the centre of right-hand 3 bays is a 6-panelled door with cast-iron knocker; porch consisting of 2 monolithic C19 granite columns supporting a C20 hood. 2 hipped dormers in the roof. Interior of left-hand end has 2 early stacks backing on to either side of the cross- passage, a highly unusual arrangement; both have chamfered plinths and cornices characteristic of C16. The stack to left has a simple granite fireplace with segmental arch, probably a replacement of the original. Beyond this room, now completely walled off in stone, is a small inner room accessible only through an external door. The roof of this section is probably early C19, with principal rafters overlapping at the apex to make a fork for the ridge, and collars pegged to their faces. Interior of right-hand section not inspected, but roof is C20, reputedly rebuilt after a thatch fire.
