SJ 98 NE MARPLE LAKES ROAD Marple Bridge 7/90 Bottoms Bridge -
G.V. II
Road bridge. c.1790. William Strutt (Junior) engineer for Samuel Oldknow. Ashlar and dressed stone. One large semi- circular span flanked by square projections and retaining walls which curve out in plan to be terminated in square piers. The ashlar parapet walls have a rounded top. An arched opening to the left gave access from Mellor Lodge via an underground tunnel to Oldknow's stables. An important and impresive example of late C18 engineering.
