COLEBROOKE LOWERTOWN
SX 79 NE
5/140 Snells Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Late C17-early C18. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob stacks
topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
3-room plan house facing south-east away from road with right (north-eastern) end
stack to room at that end, rear lateral stack to middle room, and small unheated
left (south-western) end room. 2 storeys. Irregular 3-window front comprising
various late C19 and early C20 casements with glazing bars. Late C19 4-panel front
door right of centre with contemporary hood (now with corrugated iron roof) on
shaped brackets. Roof hipped each end. Blind rear wall to road.
Interior: shows mainly late C19 plaster and joinery which probably hides earlier
features. Only in right room shows late C17-early 18 soffit-chamfered and runout
stopped bean. Both fireplaces are blocked. Roof inaccessible and feet of trusses
are plastered over but their shape and size suggests original A-frame trusses.
