4 cottages. Late C16-early C17 with late C17-early C18 alterations. Plastered cob
on rubble footings; stone rubble and cob stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick
(some plastered); thatch roof.
Row of 4 cottages facing south-west. At left (north-west) end is Hillview Cottage
which has a 2-room plan with the larger left room having a projecting end cob stack
with secondary oven projection. Adjoining to right is No. 2 Penstone Cottages with
a 1-room and left through passage plan and rear lateral cob stack. Adjoining to
right is Well Cottage and at right end is Penstone Cottage, both with 1-room plans
and rear lateral stacks. All have C20 service outshots to rear. 2 storeys.
Overall 8-window front of various C20 casements with glazing bars and all doors are
C20. Each cottage has a 2-window front and although the arrangement is fairly
regular only Hillview Cottage has a symmetrical arrangement about a central door.
Victorian post box set in the cob between Hillview Cottage and 2 Penstone Cottages.
Roof is half-hipped to left and hipped to right.
Interiors: show a surprising variety of C17, C18 and C19 detail. All the
fireplaces have plain oak lintels and include C19 brick ovens. Hillview Cottage :
the larger room has a late C17-early C18 soffit-chamfered and runout stopped axial
beam and there is a cob crosswall between the 2 rooms. Roof not inspected. 2
Penstone Cottages: no exposed beams on the ground floor. Roofspace inaccessible
but the feet of 2 A-frame trusses are exposed and the first floor partition
includes a side-pegged jointed cruck truss. Well Cottage has a late C17-early C18
soffit-chamfered and straight cut stopped crossbeam and, in the party wall with 2
Penstone Cottages a presumably late C16-early C17 oak plank-and-muntin screen with
roughly-finished vaguely-chartered muntins. In the cob party wall with Penstone
is a blocked doorway. This cob wall only stands to first floor height.
The irst floor party wall is timber-framed. Roof space is inaccessible but feet
of roughly-chamfered A-frame trusses show. Pens tone Cottage : late C17-early C18
soffit-chamfered and runout stopped crossbeam. Here the back of fireplace has been
knocked through to provide access to C20 service outshot. Roof not inspected.
The survival of a jointed cruck truss and plank-and-muntin screen suggests that a
small late C16 - early C17 farmhouse was converted to cottages in the late C17 -
early C18.
