SJ 99 SE WERNETH COMPSTALL BROW (north-east side) Compstall 2/203 Church of - St. Paul
G.V. II
Church. 1839-40 for Andrew family, chancel 1866 by James Hunt, vestry 1905. Tooled ashlar with slate roof; the chancel is rock-faced snecked stone. Plan and style like a galleried Commissioners' church. 7-bay nave with projecting plinth and small eaves cornice. Each bay has a plain lancet window and a weathered buttress (diagonal at corners). 3- stage central west tower with diagonal weathered buttresses, clock faces in stage 2, lancets to belfry and coped parapet (pinnacles missing). 2-bay polygonal chancel with similar lancets and buttresses and a 3-light east window. Interior: plain with west gallery and stained glass.
