GV II

Village hall, former school. Circa 1880. Snecked volcanic stone with volcanic ashlar quoins and Bathstone detail; red tile roof with plain and crested ridge tiles. Open hall with southern gable end facing south onto village green. C20 service rooms on left side and original entrance porch on right side. Gable-ended main block with tall gables. Continuous low moulded dripmould around building and lower section of wall is slightly battered. South front includes main window comprising a group of 3 trefoil-headed lancets, the central taller than the outer, and all under same relieving arch. Above, near top of gable is an oculus window containing a quatrefoil. Each gable has plain coping. Right (east side) includes a 3-light square-headed stone window with chamfered mullions. Entrance porch to rear under monopitch roof. Outer side has range of timber windows with heavy mullions between and in front end is a 2-centred arched doorway. Rear gable end has a window made up of 3 trefoil headed lancets all the same height and there is a ventilator near the gable top. Interior not inspected. The old school looks like part of the Rev. W T A Radford's architectural scheme for the village centre.
