DOWN ST MARY QUARRY LANE SS 70 SE 3/176 Nos. 1 and 2 Eppletons - - II
2 houses, former farmhouse. C17 and C18, probably earlier core; subdivided circa 1980. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof corrugated asbestos to outshots. long block facing south now comprising 2 adjoining 2-room plan houses with No.1 to left (west) and No.2 to right (east). Originally a 3-room-and-through-passage plan farmhouse with service room at right end and extended 1 room to left in C18. No.1 occupies the extension with end stack and former inner room. No.2 occupies former hall with axial stack backing onto passage, the passage and former service room with end stack. Continuous secondary outshots along rear. 2 storeys. Overall irregular 5-window front of various late C19 and C20 casements of different sizes, most with glazing bars. The 3 first floor windows of No.1 have low thatch eyebrows over. No.1 has a late C19-early C20 plank door and a monopitch and slate-roofed porch. No.2 has C19 6-panel door with a monopitch and shingle roofed porch. Roof half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right. fit includes mostly late C17 and early C18 carpentry and joinery detail but the layout suggests that some earlier features may be hidden. Most carpentry is hidden in No. 1. No.2: hall has soffit-chamfered crossbeam with worn probably scroll stops, the large rubble fireplace has replacement lintel and inserted or relined C19 brick side oven, C18 cupboard with panelled door in cob crosswall at upper end of hall, and winder stair to rear may be original late C17-early C18 work. Service end room has plain square-section crossbeam and fireplace here is blocked. Several old plank doors with strap hinges. Roof appears to be early C18 throughout. Where accessible it is carried on A-frame trusses with pegged lap- jointed collrs and X-apexes.
