WIDECOMBE-IN- WIDECOMBE-IN-THE-MOOR SX 77 NW THE MOOR 2/269 Saxon well, about 25 metres west of the vicarage gate on 23.8.55 the opposite side of the road

GV II

Well head. Probably Cl7 or earlier. Granite ashlar. Small structure about 1½ metres square and 1½ metres high. Roofed with a series of granite lintels, pro- jecting at each end and chamfered. Upon them rest 2 large slabs of granite forming a pitched roof, a triangular stone being placed at the apex to form a ridge. In the front is a small opening having a C20 plank door with ornamental iron hinges. Just below this are 2 small holes formerly containing outlet pipes discharging into a sunken trough.
