ST NICHOLAS STREET (West Side)

Former Old Town Hall. Circa 1870 or possibly bit earlier. Heavy Italianate. Large three storey building, marked coursing to ashlar, the end bays rusticated and slightly projecting. Panelled frieze with scrollwork, projecting moulded cornice and balustraded parapet. Six windows to upper floors, square on second floor with eared moulded architrave surrounds. Architrave surrounds to tall first floor windows having flanking strips with guilloche moulding, carved brackets to pediments over, straight to four centre windows segmental to outer ones - panelled aprons below sill course. ground floor altered with new bank front, but the end bays original with flanking rusticated Corinthian pilasters and carved brackets to projecting cornices. Right hand bay has carriageway with architrave arch. Lefthand one has doorway with similar arch.
Louis Lumiere's films were also shown here in 1897 (see Royal Hotel).
Listed for group value.
