SS 80 SW SANDFORD SHUTE (south side), Sandford

3/260 Town Barton 25.8.65 GV II

House. Late C16-early Cl7, refurbished in early-mid C19. Snecked volcanic stone; volcanic stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof. Formerly a 2-room and central through passage house facing east, both rooms with lateral stacks projecting to rear. Former stair turret projecting forward from left (south) end. In C19 converted to central staircase plan. 2 storeys. 3-window front right of gabled stair turret. C19 6-panel door with rebuilt doorcase left of centre with blocked original doorway close by to right. C19 20-pane sash at right end and late C16- early Cl7 oak 4-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions containing vertical iron bars, iron casements and leaded glass to left. 3 similar late C16-early C17 3- light windows to first floor. Above first-floor windows C19 stonework raising wall to take low-pitch slate roof. Plastered timber-framed stair turret apparently rebuilt in C19. Roof is gable-ended to right (to road), hipped to left. Rear elevation includes C19 alterations, some 12-pane sashes and C19 round-headed stair window but at right end a late C16-early C17 oak 3-light window with chamfered mullions contains green-coloured early leaded glass. Interior is largely result of C19 refurbishment and most original features are hidden. One late C16-early Cl7 oak truss in roofspace. House faces into courtyard with late C16-early Cl7 service rooms around east and south sides, now Barton Court (q.v.).
