C16, 1898. A late medieval house taken over by Ernest Newton and improved and extended in 1898 for his own use. The older part is a timber-frame of 2 bays with a gabled cross wing at the north end. A massive chimney stack was attached to the south end of the frame. Newton's work extends the house on this end by 1 bay and a larger cross wing, and there is a small gabled extension from the middle of the west side. The centre part is of 1 storey with an attic on the front (east) and 2 storeys at the rear, both wings are 2 storeyed. 1.2.1 windows. Red tile roof, 2 gabled dormers with attic at eaves level, several chimneys. The north wing has an exposed timber-frame, mostly fitted with red brickwork, but hidden by rendering on part bf the north front. The centre part is painted brickwork. The newer work is a wet rough-cast (harling) with decorative pargetting (including a circular tree design with initials representing the Newton family tree), cambered openings. Casements, with square-leaded lights. 2 doorways at the front and one at the side have simple solid frames, a segmental hood on trellises, and ½-glazed doors. Inside, there is a fireplace in the entrance hall, with simple mouldings and Dutch tiled interior and a delicately designed staircase. 2 rooms contain Georgian fireplaces, one of marble with carving. On the front of the house there is a plaque with a moulded surround, containing carved crossed oak leaves above the initial E N and the date 1898. Lead fire insurance sign.
