Details

HIGH LANE 1. 5393 (South-West Side) Oak Garth and The Garth (Formerly The Garth) SU 93 SW 10/51 II GV 2. Late C19 by J.W. Penfold; originally one house. Irregular 2-storey building with 4 bays on entrance front and a further set back right bay. High pitched tiled roof with tall brick chimneys, banded tile hung 1st flor, red brick below. Windows vary according to function, leaded casements of 2, 3 or 5 lights, some with transoms. Left bay wider and gabled. Projecting gabled entrance bay has open porch with many-chamfered pointed arch under hoodmould. Garden front more regular with larger windows, 1st and 3rd bays projecting under gables. This house was the home of Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins O.M. the joint Nobel prizewinner celebrated for his work on nutrition and contribution to the theory of vitamins. House is listed mainly for its association with him.
