Details
HALIFAX SE 0925 SW CROWN STREET (north side) 679-/14/10252 Nos. 48 AND 50 Sportsman Inn GV II Public house. Early C18, refronted 1904. By W H D Horsfall for Thomas Ramsden & Sons. Ashlar; slate roof Baroque Revival style. 2 storeys, 4 windows. Rusticated pilasters at ends have dated cartouches on low cornices. Entrance in second bay has block rustication to pilasters supporting segmental pediment, the left part of the space below blocked with stone plinth and mosaic panel with SPORTSMAN HOTEL in art nouveau decorative frame, below obscured glass light on shaped sill; to right of this Doric pilasters with entasis frame steps up to double panelled doors; pediment contains high relief painted panel showing gundog and kneeling huntsman aiming rifle, among trees. Single window to left of door and two to right recessed on plinths, with mullions and transoms in segmental headed surrounds with sill string, impost string and moulded heads with multiple keys. Cornice breaks to enclose entrance pediment and breaks forward over end pilasters. First floor windows have mullions and transoms in lugged and shouldered architraves on bracketed sill string; triple keys step up to top entablature which breaks forward slightly over central bay, defined by rusticated pilasters. Modillioned cornice runs across front gable over entrance with round- headed window and prominent eaves; flat stone coping of gable rises blocking course over entablature. Other bays have flat-headed 3-light dormers. late C20 lighting fittings on first floor; rectangular neon strip around window, and floodlights on fascia. Rear front rendered and painted, has irregular fenestration and raised quoins. Off-centre doorway and windows with raised plain ashlar surrounds, those to the right paired. Interior, has lobby with mosaic floor, brightly coloured faience wall panels, panelled inner doors. Space divided into several small rooms with panelling, stained glass, ribbed ceilings with varnished paper. lounge to right of entrance has oak panelling and original fitted seats.
