LOWER ROAD 1. 5393 (North Side) Grayswood Grayswood House SU 93 SW 10/13 II 2. Early C19 house with added Victorian range. Main garden front of 2 storeys, 5 windows. Red brick with stone-coped parapet. Gauged flat brick arches to recessed sash windows with glazing bars. Possibly later projecting one-storey porch has stone cornice and parapet; and impost string from round-arched opening with patterned fanlight and later door. On right return a one-storey round bow. Parallel rear range circa 1860, 2 storeys, 3 wide bays with an attic window under central gable. Red brick with blue headers, diagonal brick cornice, steep tiled roof. Sash windows, glazing bars above, margin lights below; and one long casement. Small right extension of malmstone rubble. Grayswood House was the home of Mrs Humphrey Ward the novelist.
