GV II*

Merchant's house. Late C17. Timber-framed and boarded to 1st floor, rendered rubble to ground floor; very steep asbestos slate roof with a deep moulded bracketed eaves cornice; 2 hipped roof dormers with late C19 or C20 8-pane 2-light casements; large rubble stack on the left. Probably 2 rooms deep with 1 room at the front left, an entrance hall slightly right of centre and a wide carriage entrance passage on the right. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attic; 4-window range with mid C19 6-pane hornless sashes. Moulded wooden cornice over ground floor which has C20 paired 4-pane horned sashes on the left and an C18 pilastered doorcase with moulded entablature, panelled reveals and a 6-panel door with glazed top panels. INTERIOR: not inspected but former list description notes: original dog-leg staircase with closed string, moulded handrail, turned balusters and square newels with finials and pendants. The use of boarding to the front represents an early and significant surviving example of this building technique. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 684).
