3 terraced houses. c1760, altered 1830-40. 4 storeys, attics
and basements. 3 windows each, No.45 with 4 window return (2
blind bays) to Southampton Place.
No.43: darkened brick. Slate roof with dormers. Stone
pedimented doorcase with engaged Ionic columns carrying
entablature; square-headed fanlight and panelled door.
Recessed sashes with architraves, 1st and 2nd floors with
enriched frieze and plain cornice. 1st floor continuous stone
balcony with cast-iron balustrade. Sill bands to 2nd and 3rd
floors. Stucco entablature with bracketed cornice and enriched
frieze. Cast-iron parapet. No.44: stucco fronted with
vermiculated rustications to flanking piers and ground floor.
Square-headed, recessed doorway with fanlight and panelled
door. Square-headed architraved sash windows, 1st floor with
Corinthian pilasters carrying entablatures and segmental
pediments, 2nd floor with cornices. Continuous cast-iron
balcony at 1st floor level. Band at 3rd floor level. Bracketed
cornice with stone balustraded parapet above and with dormers
behind. No.45: darkened brick. Slate roof with 2 dormers on
each facade, their windows architraved and forming part of the
stone balustraded parapet. Entrance in Southampton Place with
C19 stone door surround with segmental pediment on brackets.
Recessed sash windows with gauged flat brick arches, the first
floor with cast-iron balconies to each window. Stone band at
1st floor level. Bracketed cornice at 3rd floor level. Main
bracketed cornice below balustraded parapet.
INTERIORS: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached C19 cast-iron railings to areas.
HISTORICAL NOTE: tablet on exterior commemorates the residence
of the Earls of Chesterfield.
