PLYMOUTH
FORD PARK
Nos. 2 and 4

(Formerly listed as Colson House Nos.1 and 2)

GV
II
Pair of villas in planned group, now part of Plymouth College. c1850s-60s, probably by George Wightwick. Stucco; dry slate roof behind balustraded parapet projecting over modillion cornice; stuccoed end and axial stacks with moulded cornices. Italianate style. Articulated double-depth plan.

Two storeys over basement; pair of symmetrical three-bay fronts with projecting central entrance bays. Late C19 horned sashes, most in openings with moulded architraves. Moulded mid-floor string breaks forward to become a heavier moulded cornice of porch entablature over pilasters with alternate vermiculated and plain rustication; overlights and panelled doors. Ground-floor windows are tripartite and have moulded hoods.

INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.

Part of a "well-preserved L-shaped layout of particularly lavish mid C19 villas with very busy Italianate stucco detail" (Pevsner).
