II

Convalescent home. 1892 for Alonzo Pearn, opened 1895. MATERIALS: stucco with various stucco and ceramic details; asbestos slate hipped roofs with sprocketed eaves to wings and copper octagonal domes with finials over the cupolas of the 2 entrance towers, the left-hand cupola with blind openings the other with remains of its original ornate fenestration; deep stuccoed stacks over the cross walls; balustraded parapets over moulded cornices to central block and towers; projecting eaves to wings which have cast-iron verandahs to ground floor. Italianate style with some Free Style detail. PLAN: overall E-shaped plan with deeper central rear wing. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical overall 16-window articulated front plus canted ends to wings (4:1:2:2:2:1:4 bays). Original 2-pane mostly round-arched horned sashes. Overall the front has plinth, moulded impost strings; mid-floor and sill strings with brackets to central bays; moulded round arches, the flat bays with 1st-floor hoods with entablature on consoles. The 2 central bays are paired canted bays with linking segmental arch, rustication to ground floor, bowed balustraded balcony to blind window above plus segmental pediment surmounting the parapet balustrade. The entrance towers have rusticated quoin pilasters, there are stone steps up to wide round-arched doorways with pairs of panelled doors, sun-burst fanlights and pedimented 1st-floor windows with balustraded balconies on corbels. The glazed-roofed verandahs have elaborate ironwork with flat elliptical arches carried on slender turned columns with near Ionic capitals. INTERIOR: where inspected the original features survive including moulded plaster ceiling cornices, tall tiled dado panelling to entrance halls; open-well staircases with turned square balusters and chimneypieces at either end of large central room which was originally 2 rooms when the home was divided with males and females in separate halves. This is an unusual building type which is distinguished architecturally and survives virtually complete as built. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 660).
